5 Days to Take Off - Victorian Fire Concerns

I have had many people express their concerns about me cycling through Victoria in two weeks. I would just like to let everyone know that I am keeping a close look out on the Victorian fires and the areas the have been and may progress too. So far all seems well with the only slight concern is the fires around the pictured area as we will be cycling down the Princes (A1) and spending a Night in Moe.

If any one else is interested in keeping tabs a useful map is updated regularly and can be viewed here.

I really enjoyed our ride yesterday, despite the hills and rain... You are a special person, and your parents must be proud of you. I hope all is ok..I notice you have not updated for a few days. I will send photos next week...will be busy in Sydney this weekend. Keep pedalling, be safe, Karyn

About the Ride

A few years ago my father was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. For those of you who are familiar with this disease you will know and understand the lack of knowledge both socially and on a medical front. As for those who are not aware it is a very hard and painful thing to deal with on a day to day basis and it is very difficult to watch someone you love and admire go through, to read more about the disease go here.

Over time I became frustrated and depressed at the fact that there was nothing i could do to help my dad. I have never been one to sit back and just watch as things fall apart, especially when it involves someone as dear and important to me as my father. So I while I could not cure my dad I felt there had to be something I could do to support him and anyone else in the same position. That is where Pedal for Parkinson's came in.

When my father was diagnosed he was told that a way in which he could slow progression of the disease was to eat healthy and get exercise, as a result of this both my mother and father got into cycling. Be it early mornings before work, weekend outings with a picnic or even participation in organised rides like the Great Victorian Bike Ride my parents would be there ready and raring to go.

As a result of this passion for cycling my parents have developed I saw it as only fitting I did a cycle to support the cause. So on February the 14th I will be leaving the Sydney Opera House with fellow cyclists and beginning the long journey to Melbourne along the Princes Highway. We will be stopping at a range of places along the way and will arrive in Melbourne on the 26th of February; tired, sore but satisfied that something was done.

Thanks for taking the time to read up on how we are going. We have a long and hilly ride ahead of us and I have no doubts that there will be a lot of ups and downs to come, all of which I will document.
